Ho-Ho-Ho- Y'all...

I hope all you folks had a great Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. As usual my family eat way too much but it was nice to have some of my children home for Thanksgiving plus we also had my hubby's mom and dad with us too.

Now we are in December and I can't believe that we have come to the end of other year and in 2 weeks it will be Christmas and I have not even put up my tree, wrote out my Christmas cards nor gone Christmas shopping yet. But my hubby did plug in the outside Christmas lights on the house. Way to go hubby. ha ha

As I was working on a painting in my studio on Black Friday I started to hear all the crazy things that was happening with folks and I began to wonder about Christmas, for it still did not feel like Christmas to me. Then the other day I saw on Facebook that "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was coming on and I had to see it. After watching it I now feel like It's Christmas! and what Christmas really means to me.

So now I have broke out my paints and put my canvases to the side so I can now paint on some hand blown egg and turn them into Christmas ornaments.

I am also planning on doing some Christmas baking, spreading time with the grand kids making Christmas drawing, singing Christmas carols with them and not get caught up in all the Christmas marketing but just have an old fashioned Christmas with family and friends.

From my House to Yours
May your house be fill with good food, family and friend and the joy of Christmas all year around.

Well until next time, Happy Creating and God Bless

Canvas V Masonite Board

Today I would like to talk about the different traditional canvas that y'all can painting on and the one that I am using now....

I have been painting for years and I always use traditional pre-stretched & prime canvas

prime canvas panels and

Canvas paper.

But after I have lost some of my painting due to wind teaching my painting to fly, having my painting falling from my cart to the ground, and just plain traveling with my canvas from site to site this is what sometimes happen.

I was so frustrated that I started using prime canvas panels but I did not like them either for if ya got your panel wet, than ya would have a warped  & ruin painting.

So I went on the net to see what the plein air artist used to paint on but what I found was it is just a preference with each artist.

But with some artist like Roger Bansemer of "Painting and Travel" shows for PBS he uses Masonite board while he travels .

Here is a youtube video where Roger Bansemer talks about Canvas V Masonite Board
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwfV_QHeLLI

If you have watch Roger Bansemer video, he said that he like to uses prime Masonite board.  I don't.

When I went to Home Dept I bought a large Masonite board .115"x48"x96" and had them cut it into 4 sheets. Then later when we got home I had my hubby cut several
11"x 14", 8"x 10", 5"x 7" and 3"x 4 for a total of 42 pieces for just under $14.00 Now y'all can't beat that. (*v~)

After my hubby cut the board I lightly sand the edges

and then I gesso my board three and sand them to take any rough edges.

I then went out and painted but found that my paint was removing the gesso on my board and was leaving a gritty feel to my paint. But I continue to paint and as I build up a foundation on my painting I began to think, "what if I tint my board"? Hummmmmm?

So I went home from my paint out with the girls and the next day I went back to my studio to prepare more Masonite board to paint on, but this time I place 4 coats of gesso and 1 to 2 coats of a tint color like

dark gray,

light gray

 and a light pink tint.

Now u mite be asking yourself, "Why are you adding tint to your canvas"? Well that's a good question and I'm glad y'all ask. I like to add some color so that when I paint I don't see a white canvas and it gives some nice color to my background.

Try it ya mite be surprise how your painting glow...

Well until next time, Happy Creating and God Bless

Plein Air @ the Oak Glen Old School House Museum & Park

The other day I went to my first Plein Air workshop with Sharon Rachal who is an award winning artist, author and demonstrator.
I had gotten up early that morning and had my mom watch the grand babies so that I could meet everyone up at the Oak Glen Old School House Museum and Park to paint.

I was sooooooooo excited to be here and to learn some tricks of the trade of plein air. And believe me as a studio painter painting outdoors is a lot different than painting in a studio.

Everyone who was there was from Sharon Rachal class and I was the odd ball out in left field not sure how she teaches or even her style of painting. But I had to remind myself that my major goal for this year and next year too is to become more confident with plein air. So I buckle down and we all found our places and set up and started painting.
(I am on the right side of the pic, I am the one sitting down at my art table)

I started off doing good until it came to painting the rock on the schoolhouse building...When I'm in my studio I will paint each individual rock but being out door you are to give the look with only a few rocks. So I try to paint rocks and I tried and I tried and I tried to wear I was going to give up and just enjoy the view. But Sharon Rachal came over to me and ask if she could show me a trick or two and I jump to the offer. She sat down in front of my painting and show me how to paint what looks like a rock.

And after watching her for a moment the dud dud hit me and I was back to my painting quickly. By 3:30 pm we started to wrap up things but I still need to finish my painting.

So the next day I was back at it again adding little touches like the rail, steps, walkway, more color to the trees, clouds and the fallen tree leaves.

I can't wait to go out again for it really does help u to see color, shapes and beside u get to go to places that u would have never gotten out to see.

Until next time, Happy Creating and God Bless

22-26 of the 30 days challenge.

WOW!!! I can't believe we are coming to the end of the tunnel. I feel like a runner who has just come around the corner and can see the finish line.

To tell the truth I don't know how many times I wanted to though in the towel and just give up. But I knew that if I did that I would always be looking for the easy way out and I would never grow as a artist.

As a child I dreamed of becoming an artist but was not allowed because of my dyslexia and my grandmother. Later when I was a pre-teen I found myself back in art but this time I was put down while others were raise up, so again I gave up. In my 20's, 30's I try again just to be pull down again by family, friends, and x-husband, so again I gave up without a fight.

But now that I am in my 50's I am married to a sweet, loving man who has given me the confidence to be who I am a ARTIST!!!  And I will not go down without a fight.

So as I draw near to the finish line of my own race, I am learning so much that would have taken me months or even years to learn and I am glad I took up the challenge.

My 23rd painting challenge.

I am not done with it. I still need to work a little more on the barn, the mountain, just over the hold painting.
I am finding it a little hard to paint with hubby hanging around the house with his recovery...

Right now it is starting to look like other folk art painting which is NOT what I wanted so I will be reworking this one into a traditional or impressionist painting.
